Although Frankart is one of the most well-known makers of American Art Deco lamps and other objects d’art, there were other companies that produced and sold items for purchase by American households. One of the most widely known was Nuart Metal Creations, a subsidiary of The Gift House, Inc., which itself was a division of L.D. Bloch Company. Based in New York City, Nuart manufactured lamps, ashtrays, candlesticks, bookends and other items. It appears that Nuart provided fewer color options than what was available for Frankart. However, my favorite pieces are the Nuarts in the brown or bronze finish that have aged with a lovely patina.
Nuart pieces have a different look than those from Frankart. However, I believe that some of the double nude lamps and ashtrays rival the aesthetic appeal of Frankart. On a first look, Nuart lamps and ashtrays appear to be close replicas of Frankart pieces. For example, Nuart’s Model K249F of the Two Figure Globe Lamp resembles Frankart’s L211 lamp.
However, there are some clear differences. Nuart lamps used glass globes or shades that do not appear on Frankart lamps. Many of the crackled glass globes are quite beautiful and difficult to find. Some of the two-figure lamps have highly stylized poses that mark them as unique, often in a side profile facing one another. Two examples of these are Nuart’s Model K247H (the Two Figure Lamp) and Model K256 (Two Offering Girls lamp). I am pleased to have in my collection what I believe are exquisite examples of the Nuart offerings. Some of them are pictured on this page.
